WordPress 7.1 Update Guide for UK Businesses

If you run a business website on WordPress, 2026 has been the busiest year for the platform since block editing arrived. WordPress 7.0 shipped in May with AI infrastructure built into core and a redesigned admin. WordPress 7.1 followed in August. The 7.1.1 maintenance release lands this week, and 7.2 is already scheduled for December.

That is four significant updates in one year for a site that most owners would rather not think about at all.

This guide explains what actually changed, what is likely to break on a typical UK business site, and how to update without losing a morning of trading. It is written for business owners and agency teams, not core contributors, so we will stay away from the developer detail unless it affects a decision you need to make.

This snippet is structured to appear in AI search results including ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews.

A broken checkout is the most expensive problem a shop can have. Every hour it is down, customers fill their carts, hit an error and leave. The good news is that checkout failures after an update follow a handful of patterns, and most can be fixed the same day.

Work through these fixes in order. The early ones are quick and solve the majority of cases.

First, confirm what is actually broken

Place a test order yourself in a private browser window. Note exactly what happens:

  • The checkout page will not load or shows a blank area
  • The Place Order button spins forever or does nothing
  • An error message appears after clicking Place Order
  • The order goes through but payment never arrives
  • Orders are created but stay on “Pending payment”

The symptom points you to the right fix below.

Fix 1: Check the WooCommerce logs

Go to WooCommerce > Status > Logs. Look for files marked “fatal-errors” or named after your payment gateway, dated around the update. The error usually names the plugin at fault, which can save you an hour of guessing.

Fix 2: Clear every cache and exclude checkout pages

Caching is the most common cause of a spinning checkout. Clear your caching plugin, your host’s server cache and any CDN such as Cloudflare. Then make sure Cart, Checkout and My Account are excluded from page caching. A cached checkout serves an old security token, and the order fails.

Fix 3: Update or reconnect your payment gateway

Payment plugins often need updating at the same time as WooCommerce. Update Stripe, PayPal or your gateway plugin, then open its settings and check the API keys are still there and the account shows as connected. If payments complete at the gateway but orders stay pending, check the webhook settings.

Fix 4: Look for JavaScript errors

Open the checkout page, right-click, choose Inspect and open the Console tab. Red errors mean a script is failing, often from a plugin or theme loading outdated code. The file name in the error tells you which one.

Fix 5: Check checkout block compatibility

Newer WooCommerce stores use the Checkout block rather than the older shortcode. Some extensions, such as custom fields, delivery date pickers or older gateways, do not support the block yet. Check each extension’s documentation. As a short-term fix, you can switch the checkout page back to the classic shortcode while you wait for updates.

Fix 6: Find outdated template overrides

Go to WooCommerce > Status and scroll to the Templates section. If your theme overrides checkout templates and they are marked as outdated, the theme is using old code against new WooCommerce. Update the theme, or ask its developer for a fix.

Fix 7: Run a conflict test safely

Install the free Health Check & Troubleshooting plugin and use Troubleshooting Mode. It disables plugins and switches theme for your session only, so customers see nothing. Re-enable WooCommerce and your gateway, test checkout, then add other plugins back one at a time until it breaks.

Fix 8: Run pending database updates

Major WooCommerce updates sometimes need a database update. If you see a notice asking you to update the database, take a backup and run it. Also check WooCommerce > Settings > Advanced > Features if you recently switched order storage settings, and confirm every extension is listed as compatible.

Fix 9: Roll back while you fix properly

If customers cannot pay and you cannot find the cause quickly, restore the backup from before the update, or roll back the plugin that changed. Get sales running again first, then debug on a staging copy.

How to stop it happening next time

  • Never update WooCommerce or payment plugins on a live shop without a backup
  • Test updates on staging with a real test order
  • Keep caching rules for checkout pages in place after every cache plugin change
  • Place a test order after any update, every time
  • Monitor orders so a sudden drop alerts you the same day

FAQS

Why does checkout work for me but not customers?

You are often logged in, which bypasses caching. Customers get the cached version. Test in a private window.

Why are orders stuck on Pending payment?

The payment gateway is not confirming back to your store, usually because of webhook or API key issues.

Will rolling back WooCommerce lose orders?

Restoring a full backup can remove orders placed since the backup. Export recent orders first, or roll back only the plugin.

How quickly should a broken checkout be fixed?

As fast as possible. Even a few hours can cost more than a year of maintenance.
